We read several articles about social media. According to Hilary Stout, she believes social media is harming kids today. I disagree with her claim because I believe social media is not the only thing kids are on or using. We still interact with our friends offline and even more so now that we can communicate to each other and plan things through social media. I’m getting my information from the article “ Teenage Social Media Butterflies May Not Be Such a Bad Idea” and my personal opinions/experiences.
In the article, “Teenage Social Media Butterflies May Not Be Such a Bad Idea,” the author, Melissa Healy, claims that social media is rather beneficial than harmful to teenagers. According to researches that were included in the article, using social media is an activity that helps teenagers in many ways, and parents should worry about their kids using it. Youngsters who use social media are the healthiest psychologically and may be more well-adjusted as well. Also, using social media assists children in their development of emotional bonds, their own identities, and social skills. Additionally, the effect of social media is dependent on the user, so whether social media is a good or bad thing depends on how each children use it.

“Teens sneak a peek at the internet every chance they get. In fact, the average U.S. teenager spends almost nine hours a day on digital devices. Much of that time is spent on social media, such as Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook” (Stevens 1). This quote shows that social media causes kids to get hooked on looking at their phones and makes teens spend numerous hours online. I think social media is more risky because it can cause teens to become self-conscious and unhappy.
Shots Fired The ratification of the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in which the sale, manufacture and transportation of intoxicating liquids was made illegal was a period in American history known as Prohibition. Prohibition was not the first and certainly isn’t going to be the last time alcohol consumption and the government collides. Today, many Americans are posing the question- should the minimum legal drinking age be lowered to eighteen or should it stay at the age of twenty-one? In 1984, the national minimum drinking age in the United States became twenty-one years old.
According to Jay Baer, fifty-six percent of Americans have some type of social media account (The Edison Research). Social media is a massive source of communication, and in some cases can be very addictive. This is a controversial issue because the adolescent generation is being judged by the aging generations. There is a common misconception that social media overly consumes all adolescents because it is highly depended on causing the aging generations to have a negative outlook on the current generation.
Is social media dangerous for young kids, or under 13 years old?Can it affect them in a bad way? I will say yes. I agree that young kids should not use social media. Social media should not be required because it’s dangerous for young kids, it can affect their health, and it can waste their time too.
Although many believe social media allows teens to express their emotions to people they trust, studies show that nearly 40% of internet users between 18-35 regret revealing their personal emotions on a site. Many teens struggle with recognizing when they should stop sharing, who they should talk to, and when to put their phones away. All of these things could lead to extreme consequences, and social media is harming teenagers. Social media allows predators to easily take advantage of teens. According,to research, one in five U.S. teenagers who regularly log onto the internet says they’ve received an unwanted sexual solicitation via social media.

Social media has recently erupted within the past decade and is showing no signs of slowing down. New apps emerge and become the figurative “top dog” of the marketing charts and dominate aspects of a lot of teenagers and adolescents’ lives including social hierarchy, sexual tendencies, and even depression has had a correlation with these sites. But overall is social media bad for college students’ health? A study by Doctor Larry D. Rosen from California State University put together a list of unhealthy traits that are linked to social media. Starting that list is that younger facebook users seem to be more narcissistic than others that do not, however I believe a lot of variability comes with that.
Every teen has come in contact with some type of media in their life. They may have misused it once or twice. With media teens don’t understand that media can take a toll on them, and they won’t realize it. A teenager might come in contact with some type of media everyday in their life's. Teenagers don’t know that they are being effected everyday if it’s in a good or bad way.
