Although many believe social media allows teens to express their emotions to people they trust, studies show that nearly 40% of internet users between 18-35 regret revealing their personal emotions on a site. Many teens struggle with recognizing when they should stop sharing, who they should talk to, and when to put their phones away. All of these things could lead to extreme consequences, and social media is harming teenagers. Social media allows predators to easily take advantage of teens. According,to research, one in five U.S. teenagers who regularly log onto the internet says they’ve received an unwanted sexual solicitation via social media. Based, on recent research, 65% of online sex offenders used the victims social networking site to gain the victim’s home and school information. Teens who aren’t educated or don’t abide in internet safety are at risk of dangerous situations. Teens assuming only people they know and trust are seeing their posts can lead to predators knowing private information and harming them. Social media is distracting teens during school. This can deteriorate a student's grades and creates less-attentive students. Research shows that 97% of college students use their phones for non-educational purposes during class. While some may argue they’re listening at the same time, multi-tasking is difficult for even fully developed brains. Teens are distracted by their phones during class, and this will rob them of the opportunity to learn. Overall, this will harm students’ education and grades.
