Why should Business Schools change the way they operate?
Carol Adams et al (2011) highlighted that over the years, the requirements for leaders and managers have changed highlighting the need for business schools to also change. In the article the authors state “In a world facing unprecedented societal challenges (including climate change, poverty divide, and limited resources) the traditional methods of top down directing supervision and control does not work.” They went on to say “Our organizations need people who can innovate, think critically and who are self-aware.” They placed the responsibility on business schools to develop these types of leaders, those who have the courage to speak up and stay true to themselves, in an effort to redefine the norm and the negative stereotypes placed on business school graduates and their capabilities. …show more content…

They highlighted that students of these businesses schools need to be given the tools and skills needed to critically reflect on their actions and decisions to ensure that they are acting in the best interest of their stakeholders. Business academics were noted as being responsible for practicing what they teach and ensuring that they too reflect on their actions and decisions.
They also noted that there is a call from the industry to have these types of leaders on board, a sentiment also echoed by Nirenberg (2003). To achieve this, it was stated that business schools needed to embed in their curriculum “critical thinking and an understanding of business society interaction.” This is expected to give the future business leaders the required skills and values needed to transform the current business approaches to one that is more beneficial to the wider
