“Part of education is to help students be prepared for jobs, all year schooling allows students to be more prepared for professional work day hours. In the real world, employees do not get 3 months off. “ —Doctor Hawk Because we agree with the statement by Doctor Janelle Hawk, my partners and I affirm the resolution: Year round schooling benefits students, their families, and the community. We offer the following three reasons to support our side. Overcrowding, frequent breaks, and benefits to low income families.
English 6 CRT persuasive essay It is compelling to say that all high school students should be required to pass an exit exam like the other 24 states that require it but I will be telling you why that is not the best thing to do for the schools and the students. Graduation tests do not promote the knowledge, skills and habits needed for success in college or the real world. According to college professors and employers, high school graduates must be able to analyze conflicting explanations, support arguments with evidence, solve complex problems that have no obvious answer, reach conclusions, conduct research, and engage in the give-and-take of ideas.
Many people in America believe that education systems seem to be declining rather than improving. One of the solutions offered to combat the declining quality of education is year-round schooling; thereby allowing students to go to school for a shorter period of time in a year and have longer breaks between periods throughout the year as opposed to the more common type in which there are ten months of schooling and then a two-month summer break. I believe that all students should have a break where they can take the necessary amount of time allotted to relieve themselves from the stress of a busy schedule. Public schools should not have year-round schedules because they are ineffective, would lower student’s grades, and result in less time for students to relax and participate in extracurricular activities. Year-round schooling is a relic of the past, and it did not yield favorable results.
Due to a long summer break, students forget much of what they learned the previous year. During the long break students can lose two or more months of schooling. This means students lose twenty-two percent of what they learned the year before (Dennis). Additionally, teachers spend the first month of school reviewing information from the previous year. Many teachers say they see if the students retained information and then review the forgotten information.
Last month I fell asleep in class because I was so tired from having to wake up early to go to school. I just couldn’t stay awake in class, because I had to wake up at 5:45 for school and go to school. I was so embarrassed, because the teacher had to wake me up in front of the whole class, and everyone was laughing at me. I am always so scared to go to that class because I feel I will fall asleep and everyone will laugh at me just like they did before. Schools should start later because students will be more attentive, they will get better grades and have a higher chance of graduating.
It’s Time for a New School Schedule Some schools have a year-round schedule, and some schools have a summer break. Even though the school year would seem longer, schools should go year round. We would retain more information, holiday breaks are still in use, and we get weeks off after a number of school weeks.
School should Start Later School districts should make a change to their schedule. School starting later would fix a bunch of huge problems about school districts. Some people may say that school starting early isn’t that bad though, it would just be annoying to wake up early. School districts should change their time because of the bus arrival times, the education of students, and sleep concerns of kids.
“What’s your favorite time of year?” “Summer!” This is a common question asked by an adult, and a typical reply from a child. Of course summer is their favorite time of the year because they have summer break! 10-12 weekes full of sun and fun!
Students will take a standardized test at the end of the year (before summer) and one in the beginning of the school year. The school district receives all the students tests schools in the beginning of the following school year. Research shows that overall the students score better on the tests at the end of the school year rather than after they come back from summer break (Flemming, Nora). Students lose around
With a break in the summer the schools have time to shut everything down and don’t have to pay for anything. Many might say that summer break allows for students to have a “summer learning loss” and forget everything they learned the year before. On the other hand, with too much school and other activities students are stressed and need a break to travel somewhere and not have to worry about an essay that’s due the next day. Many industries count on summer vacationers for income. In the passage Year Round Schooling it states, “ Tourism and other industries that count on summer vacationers might suffer,” (Zubrzycki 2)
Should Schools Keep Summer Break? I believe that schools should keep summer break for their kids. There are many ways, having a summer break contributes to schools and the community. It is an American tradition to get out of school for the hot summer months.
Many fortunate children in this world wonder why they have to go to school, and whine because they want to stay home and play. What they don’t know is that the People around kids need them to go to school all the time not just for education, but also so they may go to work and feed their families. That is why Year-Round would be a great option for everybody to use in the US. The reason that Year-Round Schooling would be great is because, you may have food, and a place to sleep and wake up, but what about the children that don’t have what you have, they rely on their next meal coming from the school cafeteria.
An epidemic known as Summer Learning Loss has struck America and is draining it dry of good test scores. An article at LD Online reports American students are in school for 180 while Japan students are in school for 243 days and have substantially better test scores. Students in low-income households magnify the effect with parents not having time to encourage students to study. It would be way more kids absent then there is in a normal school year a lot of schools already have a big problem with attends. School all year around would also result in a lot of drop outs because kids will get tired of coming to school.
