There was nothing more exasperating and distressing than losing the freedom to express one’s self. Today, about 23% of private and public schools have a uniform policy in America (StatisticBrain). Most people especially teachers are for uniforms however uniforms have their disadvantages. School Uniforms should not be required in any school because it’s driven by commercial interests, a financial pain for families, does not improve academics, and promotes conformity over individuality. If children are forced to go to school then they should at least have the freedom to choose what to wear.

A numerous amount of companies use the uniform system as a major source of revenue such as JC Penney. “Retailer JC Penney CO. says ‘school uniforms are a huge important business for us’” (author). At JC Penney uniform shirts cost about $12-$34 and shoes range from $20-$100. In 2003 Lands’ End, a uniform company, “spent $3 million on marketing efforts directed at public schools and districts” (Procon.org). Americans spend $1 billion per year on uniforms. Other businesses have noticed the impact uniforms have had on other companies and that encourages them to sell uniforms so it also can bring limitless profits. Believe it or not, some schools actually create their own uniform business so they can make money off of it. In Nepal, there is a school that owns their own clothing business for that reason. Unfortunate families lose a lot of money when it comes to buying uniforms. School uniforms are a financial pain for many families. The average cost for students without uniforms is $200 whereas students with uniforms is $250, that is $50 more. To most it may not be much of a difference but to others it is. Depending on how many kids the family has determines how much money is spent on each child for their uniforms. If a mother had one child that’s just $250 spent on him or her. However if a mother had four children then that’s $1000. When it comes to shopping those families have no choice but to buy the required clothing for their child or children. They would have to buy a specific polo, blazer, dressing shoes, etc. However, students that do not buy uniforms have a larger variety of clothes which means a large variety of prices. Of course there will be clothes and shoes that cost more than uniforms but that family has the freedom to choose to get them or not, that allows many unfortunate and fortunate families to save money and not face a financial
