Throughout the course we have learned the meaning of work and the complex parts that makeup that meaning. What work means to one person will not mean to another. The standards and norms that one organization has will not be the same as another. In this paper, I will demonstrate how the meaning work is a continuous process and the kinds of changes I would like to see organizations and work. My first question I will be answering is what work is meaningful for you. This is question is from unit one, question b. The type of work that is meaningful for myself is one that that serves a greater purpose in my life. I want my work to serve a better purpose for others and society. My definition of meaningful working is similar to Stuart Bunderson and Jeffery Thompson’s article. Their article “The Calling of the Wild: Zookeepers, Calling, and the Double-edged Sword of Meaningful Work” examines how modern workers, the zookeepers, try to make sense of their calling and how that affects their relationship with their work. Employees can suffer from emotion labor. Emotional labor is work done to manage one's own emotions for purposes of a job requirement. According to Ciulla, “the exhaustion that paints the face of workers at the end of the day may not be physical, but emotional, because work demands more the self (8)”. Nowadays, organizations and work are overworking and overmanaging their employees’. People have put their emotions aside in order to get paid. I don’t think this produces efficient and productivity in work. People need more paid time off to get away from the demands of work. This is important for the mental, physical and emotional health.
