Article Summary

The article I chose discusses diversity in the workplace, specifically gender diversity in the male-dominant mining industry. The author talks about the history of mining and it’s rough past with women. She claims that it was once prohibited for women to work in mines and that it was even considered bad luck for women to be near mines. Mayer created “women who rock” as an initiative that encourages women to take on jobs in mining. Mayer stated the following as a way to increase gender diversity in mining:

Perhaps the most important ingredient to increase gender diversity is direct and continuous involvement from those who are in positions of power. Introducing awards and scholarships, creating in-house programs, communicating best practices and supporting industry organizations are just some of the ways mining leaders can create gender diversity. (Mayer, 2015, para. 9)

I question is it because women are not actually interested in these jobs or do these industries just not hire women? It makes me wonder if employers such as Black Construction, Core Tech, GPA, GWA, etc. actually employ any women in these positions. I believe that hiring women would actually create a better work environment, it promotes equality and women could provide input on how things could be improved from a woman’s perspective that a man isn’t aware of. It would be a great idea for our island to have a group like Women Who Rock to educate and encourage women to be more involved in these forms of industries. It not only creates more jobs and money, but also an overall positive and equal society to live
