Wonder is a novel written by R.J Palacio about a boy, Auggie. Due to Treacher Collins syndrome, Auggie has a differently shaped face. Seeing as he already has major insecurities and trust issues due to his facial differences, it is no surprise that conflict starts to brew once he begins going to school. There's a large amount of positive and negative moments throughout Auggies 5th grade experience. Auggie is bullied and looked at differently because of his disability. On the other hand, he also ended up forming many friendships. Many things can be learned from Auggies experiences such as that everyone has feelings, or discriminating against others won't truly make us feel any better about ourselves. One of these kids is Jack Will. Jack will, though hesitant at first, was one of the students who gave Auggie a tour of the school before he started attending. Jack was able to realize kids were going to be jerks to Auggie after Julian, who was one of the other tour guides said "What's the deal with your face? I mean, were you in a fire or something?” (Page 28). This was a significant moment because it was the first rude thing said to Auggie in school, but this also caused Jack to step up and become Auggies friend. Jack looks past Auggie's face and ends up genuinely caring about their friendship. Yet their friendship sours on Halloween when Auggie overhears Jack say “If I looked like him seriously, I think I would kill myself” (page 89). Jack didn't really mean this, he was just trying to fit in. Jack does everything he can to restore friendship with Auggie, and once he does their friendship is at its peak. Jack and Auggie go on to stick by each other's sides in the face of conflict. Such as when Jack punches Julian because of something that he said about Auggie.
