Writing An Annotated Bibliography

Introduction In this brief essay, I will reflect on an annotated bibliography, my key sources of review, and note-taking as a process with regards to a literature review.

Annotated bibliography When one has to curate articles for a literature review, it is best to create an annotated bibliography for several reasons. First, to ensure that one is not just simply citing scholarly articles, but rather providing deeper information about the article that will help to make it easier to identify key themes and ideas during note-taking. Second, annotations help to build detailed references for the learners which are easily spotted when the time comes to take a closer look at the article. It is important to note, there are two types of annotations which are summative and evaluative. In a summative annotation, “…the writer is representing all the main points of an article” (xx). While evaluative annotations “…include both a description and critical assessment… to give the reader a sense of the quality of the source…”(xx).

During note-taking, one looks for definitions of key terms the author(s) may want to highlight, examples of concepts that are being analyzed and acknowledgement of the critics on the author(s) position. These elements in an article demonstrate the depth of the research that the author(s) put in to the article. During this time, personal notes with regards to the methods and strategies employed by the author(s), is more meaningful as they will certainly help to quickly identify useful elements or lack thereof for the longer literature
