Have you ever wondered what technology might be like in another world? Some different technology is shown to those reading the book 1984 by George Orwell. The book, based in Oceania, was written in the early 1900’s explaining what life might be like in the year 1984. The country was run completely different than what us in America are use to. The role in technology affects the citizens of Oceania strongly because it stalls in some areas but advances in others. First, there are many different ways technology has advanced in the book 1984. For example, the use of “telescreens” in Oceania is a big advancement in technology compared to what we have today. The telescreen is a two-way television. They are kept in all homes and even out in the streets. The party uses these telescreens to spy on the people of their community. Proof of this is the lack of mobile devices, real television shows, and cars. In this book mobile devices, television shows, and cars are not talked about. This leads the people to believe that they do not have these advances in technology. The characters in the book such as Julia and Winston never mention anything about a cell phone and only make their plans to meet one another in person. An example of this is shown in the quote “ while he was helping her up the girl had slipped something into his hand.” (Orwell 106). The girl, Julia, had to slip him a note to make plans because of the lack of mobile devices. The two also talk about walking everywhere they go rather than taking a car or even a bus. Evidence of this is shown in the quote “the train was full of proles” (Orwell 117) proving that the most advanced form of transportation was a train.
