AP Biology Personal Statement

I’m applying because I’m interested in gaining experience with new hands-on research. I’ve always loved my science classes, but they inadvertently restrict one’s creativity and curiosity. The preset labs have exact steps to get a specific result because it’s simply tests students' ability to understand instructions. While AP Biology has given me more freedom (I can construct my own version of labs) SIMR would allow me to take the experiment into my own hands completely. This independence would be challenging, but that’s also why I’m applying. I take rigorous courses because I would lose motivation in a class that hardly requires trying to do well. AP classes keep me on my toes and SIMR would do the same. Continuing, SIMR would be a completely new experience for me. I’ve never participated in a summer program because I’m scared of the unknown. In school, I’m very comfortable around my friends whom I've known for years; SIMR would make me interact with new people in an entirely new setting. I know that if I want to have a successful career, I need to get out of my comfort zone — there is only so much one can accomplish in their safety bubbles. …show more content…

The molecular units of AP Biology were especially fun and inspired me to choose this path. After college, I plan to go to medical school. My ultimate goal is to become a neonatal or OB/GYN surgeon. My potential majors of interest focus on the same areas of biology that SIMR does. Furthermore, SIMR suits my career goals as well because it would expose me to real research that could help people, similar to how surgeons need to figure out new obstacles to help others
