Before traveling out to Petaluma for the Chief Petty Officer Academy I was nervous, anxious, and excited all at the same time. I was not sure what I was going to learn or how it would change me as person for the better. Now that I am here and finishing week four, I can honestly say it has been one of the most eye opening experiences of my life. I have learned more about myself in the past four weeks than I have in a lifetime. Attending the Chief Petty Officer Academy was very beneficial for my career, it has taught me how to coach someone, showed me why diversity is so important in the work place, and has me thinking of ways to make a better command climate at my unit so we can eradicate sexual assault all together. By using these new set of skills, it will help me assist others in getting from where they are now, to where they want to be with their performance and with them making their own choices. By taking time to understand their situation and deeply listen to what they have to say as well as being fully engaged so that they can truly be understood will get me to that next level of being a better leader. This will create a sense of connection and comfort, fostering a climate of openness and trust with that individual. I will use “SMART goals” to develop a goal with high personal meaning and relevance ensuring that the goals are, in fact, the individual I am coaching.
