A month after Abraham Lincoln became president of the United States. He was pursing to abolish slavery on December 6, 1864. This was known as the 13th amendment. Lincoln did purse abolishing slavery even though he was executed in April. On December 18th, this amendment was authorized.

I do this by researching his life including his birth, personal life, education, career, and what he is best known for. He was our 15th president and is best known for signing the Emancipation Proclamation. This act freed all African-American slaves that were in the confederacy.

On September 22, 1862 he issued the Emancipation Proclamation which declares that all slaves should be free as of January 1, 1863 but it did not mean that people of color would have the same rights as white people. Still after this proclamation people of color were still discriminated against and were often the targets of barbaric crimes. Also, the Proclamation didn't free all the slaves, the Proclamation only applied to the states where the federal government had no control, which were the Southern states that were currently fighting against the union. Lincoln then recognized that for this Proclamation to work it had to be in the constitution so by December 6, 1865 it had already passed the Senate, House and had the necessary number of states ratify it so it became the 13th Amendment.
