Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in Kentucky near Hodgenville. He is our 16th president who played a huge role during this unsettling time in our country’s history. He was the leader who struggled hard to preserve the Union during the War. He also set into motion the process that led to the end of slavery in the United States. He did this by passing the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. This act declared that people held as slaves in the rebellious states should be freed. However, this did not end slavery at the time. Government needed to intervene to make this effective. This was a difficult time to be the leader of the United States and a huge burden was on him as the President. However, he was brave and persevered
