As I engage this unit’s Read and Attend assignments, I find that my understanding of plagiarism is not as fully developed as I had previously thought. Our Unit 3 Attend assignment shares that “in a general sense plagiarism may be caused by carelessness” and these circumstances frequently precipitate the lack of care required while writing (Bethel University, 2014, p. 11). The academic integrity tutorial provided additional information which I found valuable as well. Common themes within each unit assignment provide strands of continuity, while assisting with a more comprehensive understanding. It is my opinion, the type of plagiarism that is hardest for me to avoid is “plagiaphrasing”, also known as “lazy paraphrasing” (Bethel University, 2014, p. 12).

Plagiarism As a student of Walden University, I am expected and held accountable for the integrity of any work that I write and submit. Walden University’s code of conduct on academic integrity states, “A student who enrolls at the university thereby agrees to respect and acknowledge the research and ideas of others in his or her work and to abide by those regulations governing work stipulated by the academic unit or academic program, and, in turn, the instructor” (Walden University, 2014). The first violation of academic integrity is plagiarism. Cheating, plagiarizing, and taking credit for another’s work is usually frowned upon, but the honor code was created to prevent these acts from occurring. Honor codes are different from school to school and are commonly not followed. The honor system was created to convey that when you lie about accomplishing something yourself, you will be penalized for it. Honor code systems should be revised because of the lack of student involvement, the lack of confidentiality, and the burdensome consequences. To begin with, student involvement plays a huge role on campuses.
However, it should be taught equally upon all students no matter what nationality and culture. International students should not be excluded because of different overseas education system, nor the policies and assumption be changed but it’s the students responsibility to follow the rules of academic integrity of conduct. In order to abide by the ethical standards put forth by the National Education Association Code of Ethics regarding student standards, steps need to be taken to fulfill this standard. First, a teacher must familiarize there self with the academic standards in their state for their content area. By understanding the standards the teacher will be able to develop an understanding of what their students are expected to learn. Next, they need to develop a plan to teach these standards to their individual students. While developing these plans they also need to create planned instructional supports to help struggling students develop an understanding.

Tiffany Mikkelson Composition 106 February 14, 2016 Honor system In the essay “Is Academic Integrity in our College Campuses Under Assault.” It asks if by having an honor system it helps keep students from cheating. I can see both sides as to how having one may or may not help. Having an honor system is a good idea as it will help to keep most students honest.
Although, an honor code could help create a trustworthy environment, the idea of just using that is not strong of a foundation as creating it requires many other factors. Just because a student body signs a form stating they shall follow a new set of rules, it does not mean a sense a trust will just formulate. Along with an honor code not being enough to create a trusting environment, it may even create tensions between students. In Source B, it states that,”…”. Honor codes are the foundation of academic honesty and that is worth the most when it comes to integrity and plagiarism is huge within high school but, not so much at the college level. The honor code has to be a bit more harsh when it comes to cheating at the high school level of education even though academic honesty statements are only within classes that are through UCONN. At my high school all classes should have an academic honesty statement that ensures that people who get caught cheating will get some serious punishment. Arden Miller and Adena Young-Jones did an article over which one tended to be worse when they found results that were kind of shocking. Of course you expect an online course to cheat more but that was not the case. The results really varied on who the person was, sexuality, age, and other personalities of a person.
