In January, 1999 a teenage girl was found murdered, and her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was found guilty on minimal evidence. The sentence of Adnan not only shook the entirety of the families and friends of Lee and Syed, but all of America in 2014 when Sarah Koenig started a podcast, titled Serial. Adnan Syed should not have been found guilty in 1999, and using sources from Serial, including a timeline that does not make sense and that has been changed many times, conflicting stories from people involved with the murder, and lack of evidence used to sentence Adnan Syed for being guilty. Whether it be people forget timelines, to saying different stories between the stories told of the day of January 13, 1999. Adnan said that the day of Hae’s murder was a another normal day for him. Adnan stated that him and Jay didn’t see each other until 4:30-5:00, around two hours after Hae was supposedly murdered (Inconsistencies, Koenig). Now let’s take a look at this from an Adnan that had just killed his girlfriend, if he lies, he flies. If Adnan said that he didn’t really remember about that day, he’d have nothing to worry about. We could also look at the fact that Jay seemed to remember so much of this day, like it happened just the day before he was interviewed. “The human brain is coded for compassion, for guilt, for some kind of empathic pain that causes the person inflicting harm to feel a degree of suffering that is in many ways as intense as what the victim is experiencing” (Here's What Happens in the Brain When People Kill, Kluger). What if Jay is telling the truth?” Seeing this could lead to Adnan’s innocence or guiltiness. Adnan’s phone records are probably the best piece of evidence that can find him guilty. At 3:32 pm a call from Adnan’s phone to a girl named Nisha was placed. Jay was with Adnan’s phone and didn’t know Nisha, so there was no reason for Jay to call her, especially for two minutes and 22 seconds (Comparisons of Adnan’s phone calls). That is one of the strongest arguments against Adnan. Knowing this, we can still confirm Adnan is innocent because looking at Jay’s character, we can see that he’s the type of guy who would call a best friends girl to try to get to know her. This could be one explanation for this
