“All Summer in a Day” Ray Bradbury Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live on a planet where there is no lemon sun to brighten your day--only constant, dreary rain? Have you wondered what it would feel like to have only seen the sun once when you were just two years old, and at the age of nine, you couldn’t remember the satisfaction you got from seeing it? In the short story “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury, the children live on Venus and this is their exact situation. Well, all but one child, Margot. Margot lived on Earth for seven years until she moved to Venus. Her greatest desire was to see the sun again, for how she missed its glow shining on her skin. Imagine waking up every day to something that you loved so much and never wanted to leave, but then one day it was gone and you wouldn’t see it again for several years. All of the other children could not remember a time when they had seen the sun, and they were deeply jealous of Margot. Their jealousy caused them to act callously towards innocent Margot. In this story, there are many themes that can be identified, a very important one being that jealousy can cause one to be selfish and narrow-minded. Margot continually spoke of the sun and would repeat over and over how much she loved it. She would describe what she had once seen in detail, but her peers wanted to hear nothing of it.
