In the text Building a Bridge, Father James Martin discusses the view of inclusion for the LGBT community within the Catholic Church. Despite the controversies that the ideas of Martin have created within his community, the idea of inclusion within the Catholic Church for the LGBT community is something that addresses some of the internal issues of the church regarding inclusivity, as well as how one should still be respectful of everyone despite how different their beliefs may be. From listening, comes learning, which is crucial for understanding the LGBT community and how they should not be considered outsiders to the church. Instead, they should learn from the LGBT community and be more open and understanding about compassion. Compassion helps us in the concept of critical thinking by enabling the ability to be more open to ideas and to be able to learn from said ideas. Another important concept that Martin discusses is the concept of sensitivity. Sensitivity is a concept that allows us to be aware of and understand what may be found offensive to others, which is especially important when it comes to being more understanding and open within a community.
