Today we live in a society that is health conscious. There are so many fad diets and workouts on the market promising weight loss results. Television is filled with diet pills or plastic surgery commercials. Everyone wants to know the secret to get fit and healthy. This book explains a natural way to be fit and healthy. So natural that they explain the way to be healthy is to be “wild”. This means we should live the way humans lived before we were civilized. This is a very interesting concept that I had not heard of before. The book that I chose is Go Wild by John J. Ratey and Richard Manning. I chose this book because I too, am on a journey to try to be fit and healthier. I want to change my lifestyle to be healthy and active. Staying active is key to staying in shape. Our body and brain were designed to run. “We have a brain for one reason only: to produce adaptable and complex movements” (Ratey and Manning, 2014, p. 100). This is an example of staying wild. The second topic that I found interesting was how lack of sleep can affect your body. Lack of sleep can cause weight gain. Lack of sleep “disrupted the body’s signaling pathways associated with the insulin response, particularly a set of hormones that signal satiety: ghrelin, leptin, and peptide YY” (Ratey and Manning, 2014, p. 128). Lack of sleep can also cause a person to become sick. It compromises the immune system in a person making them more susceptible to becoming ill. Lastly, sleep deprivation can cause the inability to recall facts. According to Ratey and Manning, Google and Nike are just a few companies that have allowed their employees to take naps during working hours.
