Leadership is a concept that extends beyond someone's position and is about inspiring, teaching, and influencing others toward a common purpose or goal. A leader is someone who not only has a vision but can also enunciate it in a way that motivates and echoes with those they lead. Its effectiveness is in giving orders and in the ability to listen and comprehend various perspectives. Throughout the book Relentless by Tim Grover, his viewpoint on leadership is explained in the mindset and strategies of the world's most relentless athletes and achievers. However, this opportunity has allowed me to expand upon my emotional intelligence, motivational skills, and approachability, broadening my scope of leadership. I have always been reserved and am more of an observer, watching the situations around me play out before I jump in and make the first move. Nonetheless, taking this step and committing to such a school has forced me to be “uncomfortable” and fit the words Time Grover emphasized. I had to take the reins of my personality and step outside the imaginary boundaries I had set for myself. Being in charge and often involved with facing hardship and overcoming challenges. You need to maintain a positive attitude and encourage others to move forward. At the same time, you should still be confident in yourself. Per Lt. Gen. Robert S. Ferrell, “Earning and building the trust of your Soldiers, civilians, peers, families, leaders, and the public” (Grover & Shari Lesser Wenk, 2014). It is essential, and I agree with that statement. I have observed my leadership qualities as I have grown over the past two years and expanded upon them. Through focusing on active listening and listening to people, not just conversations but concerns around me. This allows me to receive a lot of different information and perspectives on other situations, to be more attentive, and to make well-informed decisions, being observant and attuned to the dynamics within a group. It heightens my awareness and allows me to detect subtle shifts and emerging opportunities. It permits me to be proactive and make the individuals around me comfortable sharing their ideas, thus fostering an open environment. It can be uncommon in people's headspaces that quiet leaders are good leaders. However, being more reserved can bring different qualities to leadership that may be uncommon but not ineffective.
