Tuckman’s Five Stages of Group Development

According to Bruce Tuckman, there are five stages of team development: forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning phases (page191). In order to develop a successful team, the team needs to move through these five developmental stages.

Forming – In this stage, the group comes together for the first time and the members seek group acceptance and they are polite and they try to avoid conflicts (page 191). For example, most of the group members don’t really know what to expect, so they wait until the manager or a leader establishes clear objectives. Moreover, the members spend considerable time knowing gathering information or knowing the other colleagues.

Storming – the group members become argumentative, confrontational, defensive, or competitive (page 192). Individuals may oftentimes try to influence other members their working styles and compete for leadership positions. For example, individuals …show more content…

Additionally, individuals feel energized and committed to the project and they are ready to work (page 192). For example, participants resolve their differences and become more cooperative and cohesive. The objectives and goals of the team are clear and the group respects the authority of the leader.

Performing – in this phase, the members of the group become interdependent, confident, motivated, and perform to reach the final goal (page 192). For example, team members do not need supervision from the manager or the team leader; they also pay great attention to how they work.

Adjourning is the final stage of Tuckman’s phases of team development. In this final phase, the group disengages from the project and the team will disband. Moreover, the group will feel a combination of bittersweet of victory because members have had formed emotional bonds with each other (page
