In my second grade classroom I teach all subjects but focus on math planning and instruction. When thinking about a lesson that would be best for students to focus on the habit of mind persistence and the character strength of self-control, our Grandma’s beads lesson was best. Over the last few weeks my main focus has been persistence as students continue to grapple with challenging activities and tasks. I have incorporated weekly performance tasks, which are typically more challenging than our daily collaborative work. With collaborative work being a large part of our math routine daily, self-control is so important. These students were using every strategy they had to work through this problem. It made me wonder if the structure I was providing in previous collaborative sessions was not conducive for students to be persistent. Students were able to be persistent when I provided an activity they could connect to and when they were paired with someone who would support them the entire time. Persistence was alive in our classroom. As an anchor chart of persistence hangs in my classroom and has been a part of our daily discussions, students are embodying this. The culmination of activities on persistence has produced results. I am not saying my classroom is perfect but we have come a long way from the many tears and meltdowns around completing work that we experienced during the beginning of the year. In addition, the character strength of self-control will come with a less rigid structure. Therefore, I will work to provide an environment that is less stressful and promotes self-management of behavior. I am proud of my students and through continuous practice we will be well on our way to the development of a growth
