The power of believing that you can improve. This Ted Talk by Carol Dweck derived from her scientific studies on how children cope with challenge and difficulty. This scientific study is an example of how this Ted Talk is linked to psychology. The study is an example of basic research because it is pure science that aims to increase the scientific knowledge base. In this study Carol Dweck gave a group of 10 year olds problems that were slightly too hard for them, and received two different responses. Some of the children reacted in a positive way. They also understood the idea of a growth mindset in which their abilities could be developed from this learning. On the other hand some students had a fixed mindset perspective in which their intelligence …show more content…

This habit has created workers who can’t get through the day without a reward. However this mindset can be fixed by praising effort, strategy and focus instead of just grades. This idea of praising kids each time they show sincere effort is an example of a continuous reinforcement in which the kids are rewarded to teach the them to focus, and creating the new behavior of resilience. Another way to reward a growth mind set was shown in an online math game created for this study. In this game students were rewarded for their effort, strategy, progress, and in return the researchers received more engagement and perseverance over a long period of time from the students. This is an example of reinforcement , because the researchers added something the students wanted which is for their effort to be praised in return for the future likelihood of engagement in the game. Just the knowledge that your abilities can be developed can create a pathway into the future. Teaching students how to change their fixed mindsets can even break some of the inequality education barriers by transforming the meaning of effort and difficulty for certain groups of student who chronically underperform. For example educators have begun to create growth mindset classrooms which help bring equality in education to underprivileged schools. I find it amazing that in one year a kindergarten class in Harlem New York scored in the 95th percentile on the national achievement test, and could not even hold a pencil when they arrived at school. Same for 4th grade students in the South Bronx who were way behind, and became the number one fourth grade class in the state of New York on the state math test. In a year to a year in a half Native American kids in a school on a reservation went from the bottom of their district to the top beating the microsoft kids, and also beating inequality in education privileges. Before being taught a growth mindset they were demoralized by effort and difficulty, but now they know working hard to solve problems is when their neurons are making connections and increasing intelligence. Not only can it help your schoolwork, but also you relationships with family, or even kids at
