Brutus and Antony make speeches for Caesar’s Funeral and out of the two Antony is the stronger speaker. This is because he uses the rhetorical strategy Pathos and on example is the following quote, “He hath brought many captives home to Rome Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill... When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept... Yet Brutus says he was ambitious; And Brutus is an honourable man”(Act III, scene ii, line 1631-1632, 1634-1635, 1637-1638).
Between the two speeches given by Brutus and Marc Antony, Antony had the stronger speech. This is due to his effective use of the rhetorical devices ethos, pathos and logos, but most importantly his use of logos. Antony was the second to speak therefore being able to rebuttal most of what Brutus said. Antony uses logos very effectively when stating the actions of Caesar. “He hath brought many captives home to Rome whose ransoms did the general coffers fill.”
In the play, the two speeches contrast on the choice of rhetorical appeals towards the crowd. Brutus's speech, as the reader can see, appeals to the logic of the crowd while Mark Antony appeals to the emotions or pathos of the crowd. Brutas goes first when delivering the speech, his speech is quick and to the point. While trying not to cause chaos in the crowd, Brutas talks highly of himself to make himself seem honorable to the crowd. Brutas says "Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more" (Shakespeare 3.2).
He shows this when he says “If I were to dispose, or stir your hearts and mind to mutiny and rage, I should do Brutus wrong…” He is pretending to care for the feelings of Brutus while making him seem worse to the audience while making Caesar seem as the righteous man Antony believed him to be. Antony’s speech about Julius Caesar was better than Brutus’ speech because he made the citizens believe it. Regardless of the things said, whether true or false he made the citizens believe in him which is important.
Antony was that much better because he could listen to Brutus’s speech to know what to do during his own. He also used way more emotion and more logic when talking to the people. So after looking at pathos and logos it doesn’t even matter about who used ethos better. Antony’s speech was better, but this also shows that the city of Rome isn’t loyal after being on Brutus’s side and then going to Antony’s side. Overall, Antony had the better speech, because he had a different intention for his speech. While Brutus was just trying to defend himself and get the crowd to see his perspective, Antony had nothing to lose and was able to describe Brutus and the conspirators as bad people. He also did it in a very emotional and sarcastic way, so the crowd felt bad for him. Antony also shows the reader how important persuasion can actually be. In the end it was very evident that Antony had won the crowd over and did have the better
Antony knows the truth of the people, that is why his speech contains more pathos and ethos than Brutus’s. The outcome of the speeches are very similar. Although Brutus speaks only the truth and facts expressing his true feelings, Antony delivers the more effective speech because he uses Ethos, Pathos, and Logos and he appeals more to the Roman

Antony could counter what Brutus could say with ethos, the people of Rome trust Antony more so they would believe what Antony would say over anyone else because he has more credibility than anyone. “Ethos, in summary, are the guiding beliefs and principles we subscribe to as people, a community, an organisation or what have you” (“THE ART OF RHETORIC - HOW TO SPEAK MORE PERSUASIVELY”) Caesar was ambitious, but he was also loving and caring. Antony and Brutus had won the crowd over, but Antony spoke more truth than Brutus did and had a lot more emotion and connected with the crowd better.
This is why Antony has a better speech. He persuaded his audience to look deeper than what Brutus was saying. He changed the mood with only a few words and that really helped him and his speech. Brutus delivers a speech explaining his reasoning on why he felt he needed to kill Caesar before Caesar could do any damage to his ambition. Brutus claims that Caesar was ambitious and that would be the downfall of Rome.
Brutus wanted to speak and get out of there. He wanted a short and brief speech to try to get the people of Rome on his side and not mad at him. Antony on the other hand was very passionate about getting his point across. Antony even showed every stab wound and said each conspirator's name at where they stabbed Caesar to fire up the crowd. Antony made it clear that he was not happy and wanted to almost kill the conspirators for what they did.

Brutus delivers his speech in a laudatory manner by conveying Caesar’s deeds and claiming he was ambitious, although Antony contradicts Brutus’ claims and says Caesar spurned the crown with the intent to merely rule as a de facto dictator. Brutus’ speech reveals his motives were truly for the benefit of Rome given his nationalistic tone and Antony’s speech was merely used to obscure his true motives, which was to embroil Rome in a series of civil wars to attain power.
