During my undergraduate career, I changed my choice in major several times, but I always stayed closely related to the kinesiology focus. I would tend to stray back-and-forth between athletic training, exercise physiology and physical education certification, however, I would eventually decide to attain a bachelor’s degree in athletic training. However, upon entering the senior year of my undergraduate career, I began to realize that I would not have an easy time attaining a position that I would find desirable. Therefore, upon graduation, as I expected, I was unable to find a desirable position anywhere so I would accept a management position at Wal-Mart where I have been working since. The path that I feel to be the best way to move up to an athletic director, begins with an entry level position. Through completing research on current openings on the NCAA’s job board, I found a position currently open at the University of Illinois-Champaign that is for an assistant football coach in charge of video analysis. This would be the perfect way to enter the field of collegiate athletics for me. While I do not have previous experience playing football, I have experience in watching numerous hours of game/practice film, and I believe that I would be the perfect addition to the University of Illinois football staff. It is apparent from what I have read that it is easier for an individual at a lower level position who is working at a Division I college to enter into an athletic director position at a lower level institution such as a Division III college than it is for an individual in the same position at a different Division III college. However, this is not the path I would choose to embark upon. Instead of applying for an athletic director job immediately coming out of this football assistant position, I would look to acquire a position as an associate athletic director of marketing. This position would be an excellent way to both learn and cultivate my skills in marketing and fundraising in order to assist me in my long term plans of becoming an
