Gun control has been a controversial issue for years and numerous solutions have been proposed and enacted. The debate sparked after tragic civilian attacks, like school shootings. An example, is the tragedy in 1999 at Columbine High School. Two teens attacked the school, killing 13 people and wounding more than 20 others before killing themselves. Following this attack, numerous solutions have been argued and purposed.
Unachievable Controversy abounds in the public and private arena today with gun control once again, at the forefront. Gun control is such a hot subject it is often the first topic discussed on the nightly news and serves as a heated discussion around the dinner table in many homes. Regardless of gun control laws, people who want to kill with guns can easily find guns to kill with. Constitutional protection, Ineffective policies, and political division clearly demonstrate that gun control is not working.

Humanity is full of chaos; hate and envy seize our souls. Guns are the ultimate security for some citizens but for others, these add to a feeling of defenselessness. Throughout history, any topic related to guns means a plethora of problems.

Today, one of our nation’s most frequently brought up issues is gun control. The United States has been relatively split by opinions regarding the topic. The threat of the misuse of guns has been widely debated by both the government and media for years now, and while many think otherwise, measures must be taken to ensure the safety of citizens and to control the amount of gun violence in our current society. By recent statistics, almost three-fourths of all homicides are associated with gunfire. While guns will most likely not be banned from general ownership because of the Second Amendment and the argument centered around it, stricter laws need to be put in place for the safety of gun owners and others alike.
In the United States, almost 53 people are killed using firearms per day. (BBC News) This number is a startling display of the severity of gun violence in America, due in part to the lenient laws around storage of guns, which allow even children to access them easily. The current laws around gun storage have proven to be ineffective, as minors are often able to access guns belonging to their parents or other family members. The prospect of passing new laws that require safer storage of firearms is one worth considering because guns being less accessible would diminish the amount of gun violence in the country, and in turn improve children and teen’s mental health.
A topic that has been sweeping the nation is the topic of gun control. In America, people want to keep guns because the second amendment gives them right to bear arms. On the other side of the spectrum you have people saying that the forefathers couldn’t have any ideas how guns would become such an issue in society today. While this dilemma is causing a lot of ruckus in our society, people are trying to find a middle ground between these two groups; no one can seem to find a middle ground. No one knows how to go about this issue.

Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nomination for president supports increased gun control. She hopes to ban assault rifles, and tighten gun laws in all fifty states. The Republican nomination, Donald Trump, on the other hand does not support increased gun control and is in favor of removing harsh gun control policies.

With news stories depicting school shootings, police shootings, and other gun related violence’s, many Americans are unaware of how this is influencing their idea on whether the United States should have gun control laws. Many people may say that they feel like they are not influenced by anything when it comes to how they feel about guns and the idea of gun control laws. This however, is false.

Anti-gun control supporters believe gun control would be counterproductive to solving the complication of gun violence, while pro-gun control supporters think it will be a good resolution to the problem. This discussion has become extremely heated issue. Stricter gun control laws are necessary and beneficial to the protection and security for the nation as a whole. Gun control opponents’ claim that restrictions on firearms would not decrease violence instead institute the opposite and leave citizens defenseless, using Washington and Chicago as evidence; however these claims are misinformed and unsupported.

She states that laws requiring permits to purchase firearms and laws that strengthen background checks have a greater effect compared to indirect laws, such as laws aimed at reducing gun trafficking and improving child safety. Laws that restricted carrying guns in public and how guns can be carried had mixed results. Overall, this report exhibits how gun control has already had a beneficial impact within the parts of our country that passed them.
Currently there have been multiple proposals to solve the issue of lack of gun control but most if seems to not work or come a bit too short. Such as the example I proposed earlier about Barack Obama making the assault rifle ban but I think he could have gone further and banned even more firearms so that the country can become safer. Congress has had other laws as well that were working at the time but took the law off for unknown reasons, Bob Adams stated “Congress allowed the 10-year ban on assault weapons to expire in September despite overwhelming public support for the law and a 50 percent drop in illegal use of the rapid-fire guns” (1). The question to ask here is why would they take down a law that was working for a good 10 years?

According to a study done by the Australian Institute for Labor, “that reduced the stock of firearms by around one-fifth (and nearly halved the number of gun-owning households)... We find that the buyback led to a drop in the firearm suicide rates of almost 80%” (Leigh). Safety is a primary concern for the American public but the answer to that concern is not guns as guns would actually make the situation worse.
