Over 52% of Americans over the age of 18 have tried marijuana at some point in their lives(nbcnews.com). The use of cannabis or marijuana is said to be first used in Asia around 500 BC. The plant was not originally grown to get high but as an herbal medicine. The growing of cannabis in America was also not originally used to get high also but to make things like textiles, rope according, clothing, and paper according to (History.com). It was popularly used because it's easy to cultivate and it grows fast. The first cannabis or hemp plants had very low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol(THC) the chemical that creates the mind-altering effects (History.com).
The legalization of marijuana has been highly debated no pun intended. But in 1996 California was the first state to officially legalize cannabis. It is known as Proposition 215 but it was only legalized for medical purposes. But Colorado and Washington State were the first states to vote for marijuana to be legalized for recreational purposes. Though a lot of doctors will still prescribe cannabis because in many cases it has proven to help with pain. Marijuana has proven to help control epileptic seizures, help decrease symptoms of the Dravet syndrome, stop cancer cells from spreading, and many illnesses and disorders that can cause discomfort in a person's life. I feel marijuana should legal because if it is completely legal doctors can do more research so people who need the help will be able to use cannabis safely. Also, there has not been one recorded deaths from the use of marijuana this means it is safe enough to be tested. The use of marijuana has helped people with cancer and the pain that comes with it it will also help stop the spread of cancer throughout the
