Some people who oppose euthanasia like to argue that euthanasia is selfish and it only benefits one person, while that is not the case, a counter argument could be made if it was. That counter argument is that at the end of the day, we live for ourselves and the decision of whether or not to go forward with it ultimately lies on the patient and no one else. Euthanasia can not only eliminate the suffering of the patient, it can also relieve the suffering of others who otherwise would only be awaiting the death of their loved one. However this argument is simply not true. Euthanasia can only be suggested by a doctor, but it cannot be forced upon a patient. A doctor cannot simply make an appointment to euthanize a patient without the patient’s request. Patients who wish to go on with assisted suicide have to request it themselves, the choice is truly theirs only. In California, for example, a patient who wishes to go on with assisted suicide must request it three separate times, twice orally and once written (Physician-Assisted Suicide Fast Facts, 2016). Since patients themselves are the ones who make the decision and the ones who request euthanasia doctors are only there to assist them through the process. This disproves the claim that legalizing euthanasia would grant doctors too much power over patients.
Others who also choose to argue against euthanasia claim that if the practice of euthanasia becomes more common the value of human life would be lowered. However, euthanasia does the contrary. Giving ill patients a safe, painless, and peaceful way out of their life is regarded as important. Going through a whole process to ensure that their last moments alive are not full of agonizing pain does not devalue human life. On the contrary, leaving ill patients to suffer and die a painful death demonstrates that euthanasia is a more humane
