Genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) surround us on a daily basis. They are one of the main reasons we get products faster and in greater quantity and quality. Genetically modified organisms and food are modified on a genetic level to create better or new foods (Non-GMO). But with this new science many argue that companies should label packages of food that contain GMO’s to give the consumer the right to choose what they are consuming. GMO foods and crops are beneficial to our lives and people's lives around the world, but everyone should have a choice in what they consume and that is why we need labels. The American Association for the Advancement of Science has stated: “voluntary labeling is without value unless it is accompanied by focused consumer education” (Almendrala) because labels and anti-GMO activists may “mislead and falsely alarm consumers” (Almendrala). But nonetheless non-GMO label has become a pure notice and companies that claim to be GMO free have grown 14% annually (Barker). Anti-label activists will say that GMO free already exists. With companies that sell organic foods. These companies have to comply with a specific set of rules and that includes being GMO free, but many people wouldn’t want to be stuck in such a small range of items if they chose to go on a GMO free diet. So other companies should be putting in the effort to make everyone’s life easier and open to a wider range of food. Food industries may bring up money being an issue with switching to GMO free products. Because GMO foods cost less that is what companies prefer. But changing ingredients won’t affect money decisions too much, with more and more people buying things that are GMO free the cost of switching would be cancelled out by the sales of such items
