Intro Arts education means having students study, work with, and understand art in all its forms. Art encompasses a large field of subjects such as performing arts, visual arts, creative writing, literary criticism, and so on. However, most people get the impression that arts education is mostly useless and that kids should focus on learning their core subjects. Others do not see it that way, instead seeing it as a way of allowing kids to have a different way of thinking and working, which they may apply to other subjects, as well as allowing kids to be creative. School of Rock is a movie that portrays arts education, as well as alternative ways beyond classical arts education.

From 1992 to 2008, there has been a drop of over 10% for 18-year olds who have ever had arts education in their childhood (Rabkin & Hedberg, 2008). However, now many school are starting to see the benefits of arts in education and have started to integrate them into their curriculum. One example of this is the study at Pomaika‘i Elementary School in Hawaii, where art aided elementary students in noncognitive abilities–such as social skills, visualization, self-confidence–as they transitioned to middle school (Steele, 2016). Another area this can be seen is in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), which added art to their STEM program–creating a STEAM program–and observed how art helped student better understand more abstract scientific topics (Graham & Brouillette, 2016). There is also more out-of-school opportunities to get arts education, such as with the real-life School of Rock, which can cater to a wide variety of people and their tastes (McCarthy et. al., 2001).
