Arts Education Should Be Cut

Arts Education What's the purpose of Arts Education? Should it be saved from all of the recent cuts to the education system. The recent cuts have mainly effected any and or all arts programs. Art programs are usually first go because schools have to focus on STEM classes. Many schools have to look for grants and parental funding to keep their art programs afloat. Most art programs stick around mainly because of parent funding and grants, schools don't have the funding to just give to the arts programs. Even though arts programs are being cut it is proven to be very beneficial for students across the whole board. But art programs in schools are often the first to be cut if budget cuts are necessary. As a result, many students are missing out on the benefits of art classes”(Metla 1). Not many art programs exist for incarcerated juveniles but there is now research that proves it helps improve attitudes and self-esteem(Romanoff 60). The author got the idea for putting the juveniles' art in an exhibit when she was on a tour at the Ohio Youth Institution and saw some of their art. “One youth explaining 'This art represents my joy, my tears, my pain and my hope'” (Romanoff 58-9). “The 2014 youth exhibitor sample was larger and showed that 93% cited positive benefits including increase in self-esteem, decrease in stress, pride or recognition of the ability to reach a goal from completing, exhibiting and selling their art to benefit a charity for at-risk youth(Romanoff 58). Further research needs to be done to chart the the behavioral changes and how arts is related to that. “ Community attendance survey results showed positive attitude changes toward juvenile offenders, from 40% to 53%(Romanoff 58).
