Knowledge of Asian Americans
Asia Americans are a wide group of people and my knowledge of Asian-Americans still lacks tremendously. What I know about Asian-Americans vary from the different groups of Asian-Americans. I know that Asian-Americans practice Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism as religions. I love studying the meaning and principles behind such symbols in the cultures as Buddha, lotus flower, gI also know that education is big in Asia and is taken very seriously. I am to believe that Asians are very big on cultural and family values, having different beliefs and rituals that will bring good luck, prosperity, and success. These stereotypes can potentially have a crucial effect on Asian American students’ socialization in the school system and cause them to be alienated. Students who are repeatedly rejected by peers are more susceptible to depression, loneliness, and stress ("Model Minority Stereotype", 2016). Along with the myth of “model minority”, Asian Americans also face marginalization in race relations when asked are yellow people Black or white. Okihiro says “Implicit within the question is a construct of American society that defines race relations as bipolar-between black and white- and that locates Asians somewhere along the divide between black and white” (Okihiro, 2016). This construct is shows the “history of Asians evolution from minority to majority status, or “from hardship and discrimination to become a model of self-respect and achievement in today’s America “ (Okihiro, 2016). Asians were concurrent members of the nonwhite/other population, regardless of sometimes being classified as white. Asian-American culture differs from American culture in considering their cultural characteristics, values, and practices. “Confucian ideals, regarding respect for elders deferred gratification and discipline, are a strong influence in many East and Southeast Asian cultures (Feng, 1994)”. It is very common for Asian families to instill values of respect, success in education, self-control, and taking care of family in their children. Failing in school is considered a lack of motivation on the child and often increase restrictions on the child. Americans are the opposite. Americans tend to be more dependent and reliant on their parents and teachers to get them where they need to be in life and will selfishly choose themselves over family
