In the beginning of the semester, I was unsure of what I wanted to do with my life. I was an exploratory major, but had Media Arts and Science in mind. As time went on, I drifted away from that path because I would have had to transfer to IUPUI in the spring semester, and that was something I did not feel ready to do at all. As the semester continued, my interest in my American Sign Language (ASL) class began to grow. Before long, I knew that was what I wanted to major in. I have been interested in ASL since I was a little kid, and even taught myself the alphabet, so it was not too much of a surprise to me that I enjoyed the class as much as I did. Within the course, we have studied the signs along with aspects of deaf culture, and the discussions in that class have shown me how truly important it is for people in the hearing world to communicate with the deaf and hard of hearing. Upon completion, I will be a licensed ASL interpreter. Despite all the good feelings I have toward my current career path, it does seem to go against my personality type. I am extremely introverted, and therefore it does not make much sense that I would want a career where I will have to be pushing myself out of my comfort zone regularly while being in constant communication with those around me. However, I think it will be good for me. I have already seen improvements in myself as a result of ASL; I am less uncomfortable around others and slightly more confident overall. I think my motivation for completing my goal would simply be my passion for the language and the fact that the deaf and hard of hearing need people within the hearing world to know their language – they need us to understand them.
