The importance of a coaching plan is multileveled in my opinion. The first is understanding and sharing that understanding of curriculum and best practices for teaching. The next level is again understanding the schools’ data to then know what and how to make improvements. The plan then clearly places those items into a sequential process to support teachers and move them in the direction of improving their own practices to fit the needs of the school and students. Continue to disaggregate the data with teachers not just by myself, while we do this I would ensure the teachers understand the data.
2. Locate the weak areas and then break down the data if possible by standard, this is so a as a school can determine how all the grade levels can support the areas needing growth. Create goals for the class and teacher.
3. Research best practices for the areas needing improvement or that support the teachers specific goal, and share with teachers, offer modeling and support to the teacher to ensure they can learn and improve instruction from the professional development.
4. Depending on the teachers, time, and principal I would offer either a book study, articles or videos to show and model then modeling the expected teaching practice.
5. Observe the teacher utilizing the new skills they obtained, check for progress toward the mutual goal.
6. If the teacher struggles to move toward the goal, provide further support and another style of professional development to ensure that it is not due to lack of understanding.
7. Continuously check on the progress, once the teacher achieves the goal and the student data shows growth or mastery then move to other goals and continue the cycle until it is not
