Australian Infrastructure Investment Rollout

In April 2009, the Federal Government announced its plans to finance the biggest Australian infrastructure investment rollout called the National Broadband Network (NBN). The NBN will be the biggest telecommunications reform in Australian history implementing fibre-optic and fixed wireless satellite infrastructure to replace the current existing broadband infrastructure with a more reliable broadband service.

The NBN aims to provide a platform in Australian that not only harvests innovation but a platform that brings economic and social benefits to all Australians. The NBN will provide its high-speed access through a mixture of optic fibres, fixed wireless and next generation satellite. The implementation of the NBN will prepare Australia to withstand any future infrastructure challenges (nbn.com.au). The NBN will be a positive move for all Australians.

McCosker & Dodd, state that the design and rollout of a comprehensive fibre optic across Australia has introduced a great deal of discussion in regard to innovation in both the media technology and content provision. (2013, p3). The Government expect the NBN will provide peak download rates of at least 25 megabits per second (nbn.com.au) to meet the needs of the end users. Even though this level of capacity is not needed at the current moment, when the time comes, Australia will be ready.

The Government are very committed to ensure that all Australians have access as soon as possible to good, high speed quality broadband. NBN spokesperson Dan Chamberlain recently told ABC News that “the NBN will supply a service where users can upload and download at the same speed”.
