Business Issue with in the workplace
Graduating the Air Force Academy and commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force was definitely a dream come true. At that moment in time, I was unsure of what to expect in the operational Air Force, other than being told by my commander, that it was a different atmosphere aside from the military training taught at school. After entering my first job as an officer and being stationed at Vandenberg for over two years, I noticed several problems within the work place. Self-esteem is your general belief about your own self-worth (Fugate, p. 89). Self-esteem is measured by having people indicate their agreement or disagreement with both positive and negative statements about themselves (Fugate, p. 89). In order for someone to truly evaluate themselves, constructive feedback is needed form the leadership, which stems from active communication. If a supervisor does not communicate or provide advice, no improvements can be made to help increase an individual’s self-esteem. Fugate states, “those with low self-efficacy and employees victimized by learned helplessness need lots of constructive pointers and positive feedback (Fugate, p. 90).” This can not be performed without effective communication; therefore, it is paramount for leadership to communicate effectively. Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (“Read and Study,” n.d.).” Encouragement from leadership helps build more confidence in a person and boosts the individual’s self-esteem. As mentioned in the presentation, the need for recognition is vital. We want to know that our efforts are accomplishing something. If we are not being recognized, that means we are a failure. Communication is key to operating a successful firm, business, organization, or in this case a squadron. Being able to communicate with one another allows individuals to be on the same page and provides a clear example of the leader’s intent and goals for the firm, business, organization, or squadron. According to Fitzpatrick, effective communication leads to understanding (Fitzpatrick, n.d.). Effective communication must include listening skills, which allows participants to properly exchange ideas (Fitzpatrick, n.d.). Communication at all levels is imperative because it creates an environment to where everyone is working together and not against one another. Following the same plan or mission to accomplish the same goal is all a direct reflection of great communication from the bottom to the top of the chain of command. John C. Maxwell states, “it is a leader’s duty to prepare so that he or she can communicate clearly when the opportunity arises. (Maxwell, p. 3). For example, I transitioned into a new squadron in September of 2016. I was not notified by my commander or DO and instead, a friend of mine told me about the change from a meeting that took place. I was not involved in the meeting at all and I saw my name on a piece of paper, indicating that I was moving to a new unit. It was definitely frustrating at the time since I
