The Importance of Being an Authoritative Educator
This semester I had the chance of attending a wonderful class where the teacher, and the students had fostered a relation of mutual respect, and understanding. This class had a feeling that is hard to explain, because it did not felt like another day in class, but rather it felt like a kids’ clubhouse, where you would come to be productive, and have fun discussing topic with your friends and teacher.
In this classroom students had a lot of autonomy to take things at a pace that did not felt like the teacher was rushing them through the content, but rather being there for them to guide them through the process if they were to struggle. Moreover, the fact that students worked in groups of two facilitated the learning process, because if one person did not understand something, the friend could help their peer. Moreover, he would also go around the room and talk to them about their specific topic, by the end of class, usually 10 minutes before the next period. He would always introduce a questions that related to the general topic of the day, while masking that question under something that he knew would appeal to the students. In order to promote formal operations, as the students would have to really think how to answer the question. Another thing that was also happening was that the question he would ask, although different, was always similar to the Essential Question that he would put on the board at the beginning of class. The only difference was that the question at the beginning was just a question for the current topic the students were working on, while the question to end the class was applying the theory or the topic the students were working on that
