When I came to Binghamton University as an undergraduate, I was convinced that I wanted to spend my life career as a mathematician. I have a natural knack and passion for mathematics. In fact, I was awarded for excellence in mathematical science, and given a $1000 scholarship for my work as an undergraduate. The reward was a pleasant surprise, and I am honored and grateful to receive that kind of recognition. Receiving the reward gave me an amazing sense of pride and accomplishment. Furthermore, it instilled a sense of validation, a sense that I had made the right decision in pursuing my passion. I will never lose my love for math. So why then did I decide to pursue a Master of Science in computer science?
As I went through my upper level math courses, I began to realize that the material was becoming harder to apply and relate to everyday life. The theory is interesting, but I do not want to spend my life pursuing theory just for the sake of theory. Although I am changing majors, I feel prepared for the transition, thanks to the support and encouragement from the advisers of the computer science department. I want to pursue a degree in computer science so I can help create new technology and solve problems that will ultimately better the lives of others. The courses offered in the graduate level align with the material I want to learn going forward. I feel that my degree in mathematics has given me the analytical skills, critical thinking, and ability to solve problems that I will need to be a proficient computer scientist.
