Brief Summary Of Mr. Lopez's Fight

Mr. Lopez tends to get into fights. He reports that he met his dad when he entered middle school and afterward, began fighting everybody. He described assault charges he received as a minor where he was charged with assault of a police officer and assault with a deadly weapon but claims that he cannot remember the details. Currently, he has a 3rd-degree assault charge for a fight with a stranger he beat up in the parking lot of his ex-wife’s workplace. He also reports having a fight with his older brother about a girl his brother was dating. He says they both sustained severe injuries such as broken bones. He reported that the worst fight he got into was with his father in the garage when he was a teenager. He says that his stepmother was angry and told his father to come get him. He says father grabbed him by the throat and hit him with a wrench, a wood plank, a steel bar, his fists, and then beat his head on the cement until he blacked out and was taken to the hospital. When Mr. Lopez was asked to about a time he felt like he might get into a fight but didn’t, he described being at work with a supervisor looking over his shoulder and knocking him out to teach him a lesson.

Lopez has difficulty navigating situations where people get along. As one of his early memories, Mr. Lopez describes a situation in which his mother tried to hold his hand while walking to check the mail. He wrenched his hand out of hers and she got angry, picked him up, and walked him back to the house. In my opinion, the memory is a representation of how dangerous it is to get along. When the mother figure tries to hold the little boy’s hand, he wrenches away and the two to fight. They fight effectively, establishing a pattern that trying to get close to people leads to fighting.
