Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are institutions of higher education in the United States founded primarily for the education of African Americans. Prior to the mid-1960s, HBCUs were virtually the only institutions open to African Americans due to the vast majority of predominantly white institutions prohibiting qualified African Americans from acceptance during the time of segregation. As such, they are institutional products of an era of discrimination and socially constructed racism against African Americans (Joseph, 2013). Biehlmann highlights how the presence of Black professors and administrators creates a setting that is in tune with the “specific knowledge of the Black experience in America,” (Biehlmann). When I think of theology, I instantly want to break the word down. I have a science background and understand unfamiliar words by looking at their parts. For me, theology is theo- or God and -ology or the study of. From this, I understand theology to be the study of God. Studying God is most familiar to me as something that members of the historical clergy had the freedom to indulge in all the time.
As a prospective member of the Masters of Arts in History program at Liberty University I hope to accomplish several things. I am currently serving as a high school history teacher and this program will benefit both my students and myself alike in the foreseeable future. This includes reaching the goals of earning my master’s degree which will result in a higher level of professional knowledge in my content area, while increasing my income simultaneously. This is not the only positive factor, Liberty’s program will also contribute directly to growth in regards to my relationship with Jesus Christ.
It is clear that these institutions have played a critical role in shaping American society. HBCUs have a rich history of providing access to higher education for Black Americans during a time of slavery and institutional racism. Despite facing numerous challenges, including financial instability, declining enrollment, and perception issues, HBCUs have continued to produce successful graduates in various fields and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education. Looking towards the future, HBCUs have a unique opportunity to continue their important role in advancing social justice and promoting diversity in higher education.
When I heard about North Carolina A&T State University (N.C.A. & T.), I was exceedingly surprised that such an HBCU existed; the location only compliments it further. Even though it is ways from Maryland, I am inclined to make the trip in order to pursue my beliefs and passions in life. I want to able to expand my horizon, open my mind to different perspectives, and absorb tremendous amounts of educational information with no hesitation. I am ranked in the top five of my class with a 3.9 cumulative grade point average GPA, and I have the familiarity of AP courses. Consequently, I obtain the leadership qualities of developing original ideas and skills.
I am interested in Howard University because it is an HBCU that encompass the themes of cultural diversity and education. Your commitment to scholars ensures me that at your school I will be right at home. Since I intend on on going down a medical path, I know that Howard University will provide me with best resources to follow my dreams. As a child I was always interested in the worlds around me and how things worked. As a result I participated in a Summer Enrichment Program located at Indiana University in Bloomington.
I currently am a junior Nursing major and Psychology minor at the illustrious Winston Salem State University. My choice to attend a HBCU has been one of the best decisions I have ever made in my twenty one years of life. It brings my heart so much pleasure in all thing that I do at my HBCU. As an aspiring nurse, I would love to bring my past experiences to Towson University. I was incredibly privileged to have been selected to attend medical camp in the summer of 2014 with North Shore Long Island Jewish Heath System, the largest employer on the island I am from. There I had amazing hands-on experience and spent over forty hours shadowing healthcare professionals. This experience was transformative for me, because I discovered my strong for medicine and how nursing is the perfect career for me. This program put me on the track I am on in my life today and hopefully I can bring those experiences and the passion instilled in me from those experiences to Towson University.
All along, I have managed to maintain the principles of ethics and integrity, a strong sense of purpose, and morality, which binds me rigidly. Appointment as student leader in all stages of my school and college life has presented me with opportunity to interact with people, develop organizational and communication skills. My involvement with speech, debate and sports has made me more than just an academic person In the pursuit of excellence and with a passion to reach the highest skills in my discipline, I look upon University of Texas, Arlington a springboard to accomplish my dreams. COMMON APP [707] Graduating from high school, I knew I wanted to attend a university that had a strong computer science program, a culture of entrepreneurship, and students who were happy. In many ways, my time at USC has largely satisfied these criteria and taught me a lot about what I want out of my undergraduate experience. However, it has also spurred intellectual development and changed my academic plans, leading me to believe that transferring schools will help me fully achieve my goals.
Going from a middle school that was majority Hispanic to a majority Asian high school, I was made to realize that the world consists of individuals with varying passions and capabilities. This shift in my life has driven me to learn more in order to satisfy my curiosity. This is where Boston University can help me. With students from over 100 countries, not only will I share my culture, skills, and interests, I am devoted to learning about others as well so that I can become more knowledgeable about the world. One of the many things I look forward to in Boston University is the plethora of courses offered and the diverse student organizations there are.
Students are given a checklist of strategies and suggested items to mention in their essays that are supposedly aimed to set them apart from other students. Writing essays for admissions into college, or a specific program, is one of the most important parts of our lives; this could essentially “make-or-break” our entire application, so we heavily rely on the suggestions and influence of what everyone else believes is the “right way” of completing the essay. This realization has led me to choose Oscar Wilde’s quote “... Nothing that is worth knowing can be taught,” because students are taught the perceived “right way” of living, but knowledge acquired through the systematic instruction of a whole cannot possibly lead each individual towards
The heart of New York City is New York University. By joining the network of NYU, I will be able to study at an institution that has a long tradition of academic excellence among private universities in the United States. Additionally, I will be able to be part of an internationally recognized learning network with locations all across the globe. It would be a pleasure to study at a globally recognized university. A friend of mine who is a recent graduate from NYU College of Nursing has praised the program and conveyed to me a very positive experience.
