Article Summary In the article Building School Morale, Maureen Robins discussed her experiences as an assistant principal at a middle school in Queens. Robins served as one of the assistant principals for three different principals. The article discussed the differences in the leadership styles at her school and how each style changed the school moral. The first principal at her school was more of a participatory style leadership. The first principal had rituals and routines of working together with the administrative cabinet at the school. The administrative would come together at the end of the day and share the day’s events. The first principal encouraged shared leadership. The second principals laid back form of leadership damaged the schools’ reputation. Under his leadership the school began having discipline problems and nonexistent academic progress. The found that socializing among staff fosters congeniality that is essential among faculty and staff.

Article Analysis I learned from that article that there is a great need for leadership styles that promote a positive work environment. I can relate to the authors situations of working under principals that have different styles of leading the school. I have worked under four different principals and each had different leadership styles. I agree with the authors’ views on trust issues, student achievement and the school’s reputation changing due to the leader of the school setting the tone for the environment of the school. When I worked under a principal that was laid back and unconcerned, I witness colleagues that I know were hard worker become laid back and unconcerned. I also witness the school culture and climate change due to the lack of motivation from the leadership. I agree with the authors views on the importance of building the schools staff moral in order to move forward
