Bullying is a major issue facing today’s tween and teens. Research shows that bullying can lead to low self-esteem, depression, missed school, bullying violence, substance abuse and suicide. National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center presented a national survey conducted in 6th – 10th grades and 13% said they bullied other kids, 11% were bullied and 6% said they both bullied others and were bullied themselves. There are six types of bullying found in schools which include: physical bullying, verbal bullying, relational aggressive bullying, cyber bullying, sexual bullying and prejudicial bullying.

Many think this type of bullying is not serious and shrug it off. A lot of adults tell kids who are being verbally bullied to “grow a thick skin’ or to just ignore the bully and they will be left alone. Unfortunately research has proven that verbal bullying can leave its victims with deep emotional scars. Special needs children are often the victims of verbal bullying.
Relational aggressive bullies also referred to as emotional bullies are more commonly girls and most often seen middle school. Emotional bullies or “mean girls” are often in their own group or clique and spread rumors and manipulates situations so the child on the receiving end is teased, made fun of, put down, ignored and excluded.
