CWO4 Hall: A Personal Definition Of Leadership

My personal definition of leadership is; create an environment that encourages others to act towards a common goal. My development as a leader is the result of diverse experiences and challenges that have strengthened my judgment and character. I have Learned from theory, Experience through practice, Analyzed using reflection and Deepened my understanding of leadership through mentoring. However, my greatest leadership influence was the privilege to work for CWO4 Brian Hall.

CWO4 Hall is a mild-mannered person from North Dakota that personifies traditional mid-west values. He had served in the Marine Corps during the early 1980’s and since joining the Coast Guard he has served our afloat cutter community for seventeen out of his twenty years

I had the opportunity to work for him from three years and couldn’t be more grateful. The times I feel the pain of growth while on my journey towards leadership and technical excellence, the first question I ask myself is. What would Mr. Hall do? The three areas of focus I have asked myself that question are in; improving clarity in my philosophy of leadership, describing a compelling image of what our future could be and finally searching outside our organization for innovative ways to improve what we do. All of the behaviors that I was evaluated low in were not much of a surprise to me, but outlined below is my courses of action to improve those behaviors. My philosophy of leadership is sometimes something I may leave unclear. I feel I do a very good job outreaching, inspiring others and ensuring they want to come to work each day. I also feel I do a great job of driving results. However, I lack a vision to the impetus that brings both together. My way to achieve this will be to use a media source to reach my people. The media source will be a poster that I hang on my desk, and outside my office. It will outline and describe the three things I value towards our journey towards

The issue I would improve would be a concern in the Damage Controlman rating for several years now. In short, due to the purchases of new cutters and small boats new maintenance procedures were put in place that hampered our ability to perform needed welding procedures. I would search outside the Coast Guard to observe how professional civilian welding organizations structure their business and certify their people to have the ability to perform welds.
