The US national debt is 19.6 trillion dollars and is still increasing. If the US wants to lower the national debt affectedly, then the US should legalize and create taxes for cannabis. Cannabis has been voted to be legal in 26 states and the District of Columbia. These states that legalize Cannabis are now seeing a decrease in their state debt and also a safer environment for families and kids. On another hand, 24 states in the US feel that Cannabis should not be legalized because cannabis could fall into the hands of teenagers and over time teens will use harder drugs like Cocaine and Heroin. Many ideas have been proposed to lower the national debt; although, they did not do enough to decrease the debt. Now, we have something to make a significant cut in the debt. In an Academic Journal titled Design considerations for legalizing cannabis: lessons inspired by analysis of California’s Proposition 19 talks a lot about the sale of cannabis and sinsemilla (a different form of cannabis) and how they impact California’s economy. The Journal said that “The literature recognizes that legalization will lower prices, but may underestimate the potential magnitude of the decline. Current wholesale prices in the United States are $500–1500 per pound for commercial grade.” So, if people are paying $500–1500 per pound, then the people are giving the government $7–13 per gram each time they buy cannabis and sinsemilla. That is more than the taxes on cigarettes. Cigarettes have a $3.00 tax on a 20-gram package; foremost, cannabis and sinsemilla double and sometimes quadruple the income that cigarettes brings in today.
