There are many pros and cons with the subject of legalizing marijuana. Will it help the economy? Will it increase taxes? Is it it moral or even ethical? Many people will jump to conclusions before knowing all the facts. What are the prevailing issues for and against the legalization of marijuana? Just because something is illegal doesn’t mean that it is bad and just because something is legal doesn’t mean it is good.

There are many good reasons for marijuana to be legal. One of the most basic reasons is that from a philosophical point of view, an individual should be able to decide make choices for themselves. In the United States, all levels of government participate in the “War on Drugs.” The United States spends billions of dollars per year chasing down peaceful people that just happen to like to get high. These people get locked up in prison and the taxpayers have to pay the taxes to keep them locked up. taxpayers have to pay for almost everything food, housing, healthcare, attorney fees and court costs. This is extremely expensive! The United States and all of its people could save billions of dollars a year if weed was legalized. Also if marijuana was legal the government could collect taxes on it and monitor how much is made. There is not sufficient evidence to show that the prohibition of weed is lowing the usage rate of the drug.Also there are several theories that say that prohibition of the substance suggest that prohibition could possibly increase the usage of the drug. One unintended effect of the prohibition is that marijuana is very popular in schools. Many studies suggest that the reason why is because it is available. You do not have to be 21 to purchase marijuana, weed dealers usually do not care how old you are as long as you have the money to pay for it. It is easier for a high school student to obtain weed than it is for them to obtain alcohol. The reason being is because alcohol is legal and therefore regulated to keep it away from children.

If the goal is to lower drug usage then we should focus on making better programs for drug addicts, and to help the youth realize how bad drugs are. The current prohibition scheme does not allow such reasonable approaches to weed; instead there are “DARE” police officers in schools spreading lies about drugs in schools, policies that result in jail time rather than remediation groups for people with real drug problems.The government tried prohibition with alcohol and it failed
