Introduction/career goals: Upon graduating, I plan on seeking employment in a public school setting. Even though I am open to working at any level, my first preference would be working at the elementary level. Working at this level would enable me to work teachers to catch and/or start early with literacy problems. Accomplishments in learning: Studying for this degree has taught me the importance of insuring the future leaders are 21st Century ready. It is not enough to just expose students to information/literacy skills, we make sure they apply understand how to apply it to real world situations. Students need to know clearly how to apply it to school assignments, but also how the information will help in future employment opportunities. As a future librarian, I realize now there are many more literature awards other than Newberry Medal and Caldecott Award. The knowledge of the various awards will aid me to help students and teachers make needed book selections. Using technology learned like Flipsnap, Storyboard, Screencast, and Toondoo, I will be utilized to alert students and teachers and promote the various book awards and list. Many low income children and adults do have adequate access to information and literacy materials. My desire is to collaborate with an apartment complex which mainly serves low income population. An apartment or office space will be stocked with a free library of materials. Students and parents will able to come obtain books that are kept or brought back to trade for other books. However, this free library will employ some ideas from Communities in School (https://www.communitiesinschools.org/) uses.
