College Admissions Essay: The Failure Of High School

When I was a junior in high school, I received the lowest grades of my academic career so far. Up until that point, I was focused on my friends, and enjoying my high school experience to the fullest. These grades were a wakeup call for me.

School had just recently ended, and my grade card had just come in the mail. I opened it without thinking, but soon came to the realization that I had made a huge mistake. Inside that envelope were the lowest grades I had ever received to date. Looking at these grades made my stomach churn, it was at this moment that I realized how poorly I performed during my spring semester as a junior. All I could think about was my plans to go to a four-year college, and If it would even be possible now. It was devastating to know that I might not be able to get into my top college choices. I realized I had failed myself, and my future.

Although failing is never an enjoyable experience—it is always a valuable learning experience. Receiving the lowest grades, I had ever gotten made me realize that high school and education are a part of the first building blocks to my future. High school shapes you as a student and is often not treated with enough importance, but I do not believe that failing or making mistakes in high school means you cannot be successful in the future. After coming out of my junior year with bad grades I knew I would have to work twice as hard my senior year to make up for it and show that I did learn from my failure. At the start of my senior year I got my first internship with United Way of Knox County as a Digital Marketing Manager, then in October I started a fellowship with Ohio Together, and now I am a Digital Marketing intern for Hot Yoga Escape, a small business in the area.
