The Kansas Association of Youth, or KAY, as it is commonly called, is a group that has become a life-changing opportunity. KAY is devoted to teaching students about leadership and serving people. In the beginning, I was reluctant to join KAY as I did not know what it was, but thanks to one of my best friends, I heard all about it and what it entailed. I joined KAY my junior year, deciding to give it a chance, and it has helped make me a better citizen and person all around. While we may not be able to control everything that happens, Kay has taught me the importance of protecting and providing for my community. Another aspect of KAY is learning how to work well with others that you may not know or like. KAY includes junior high and high school students and helps teach them to work together to reach a common goal. This year, KAY, NHS, and FCCLA all teamed up to raise money for a family in need. We worked tirelessly together over three days to make over five hundred dozen cinnamon rolls that we sold to our community, which wanted to help us achieve our goal. In the end, while we were from different organizations, we worked well together, and we were able to give the family over $5,000 to go towards replacing the things they lost. The family that we were able to give this to is also one of my best friends, and it really opened my eyes to how communities come together to support families in need. Overall, Kay has been an amazing experience that I will continue to carry throughout my life. Kay has taught me that my community needs help and showed me how community service can help with some of the
