Despite claims that anyone can be a teacher, I find this to be untrue and a stereotype of what society believes teaching is. Effective teaching requires a person to have knowledge and most importantly passion. A quote being passed around about the Education community is, “Those who cannot, teach”. For me, I simply cannot fathom why this quote would catch on like a wildfire, since teaching requires a vast amount of knowledge that even surpasses the subject(s) that you as an educator are going to be teaching. I feel that it is my duty as a future Art Educator that it is my personal responsibility to teach children about not just art, but holistically mesh subjects together in a way that creates meaningful learning, promotes personal, and environmental development. Students are having strict formative assessments crammed down their throats and teachers are having their jobs threatened as a result of these test scores. All in all, this cycle is becoming more and more damaging to both students and teachers. Teachers have less time to plan lessons and less time to connect with students. Fortunately, strict formative assessment has not yet hit Art Education, which is why I believe we can help turn education into a positive experience once again. In my classroom I will practice being transparent and wholesome so that my students take away that not all teachers are grumpy and only care about ‘the test’. I want my students to feel welcomed in my classroom and to know that they have freedom to express their thoughts and or feelings without being judged. By creating this transparent and caring environment for my students, I hope to nurture learning that they will carry with them for their whole
