I am applying to the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences because I love to tinkering. The idea of taking something apart and fiddling with it to see how it works, how to make it better, or just to keep myself busy has always been a passion of minebeen constant in my life, and it is how I will approach my intellectual and academic interests at the University of Pennsylvania.
I have some ideas of what I want to study in college but am not completely sure. It is very appealing to know that my route to a degree is not set in stone at the Univesity of Pennsylvania because the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences does not pressure its students to declare a major until the end of their freshman year. The University of Pennsylvania does an amazing job providing students with the opportunity to study in its other schools. I have some interest in studying actuarial sciences and by going to the University of Pennsylvania, I would be able to supplement my incredible engineering studies through various studies courses at the Wharton School. My desire for a concern for becoming a well-rounded educationindividual could easily be satisfiedquelled through this and similar opportunities. The chance toPursuing my studiesstudy abroad is another way I would explore my interests. I want to become a globally aware individual and Penn Abroad provides the means and opportunities for me to achieve that. Studying abroad would give me full immersion into another culture and allow me to understand a world and society outside of my own.
What appeals to me most about how I could explore my interests through the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences is specifically its research programs. The University of Pennsylvania is one of the highest ranked research institutions in the country with unmatched facilities. To have the ability to take what I learn in the classroom and apply it to real world situations and help make a difference in any capacity through world-class research, is something I would really look forward to at a university. Engaging with professors outside of the regularly defined curriculum would be the perfect complement to any of my studies and keep me intellectually stimulated and interested in what I am learning
